Academic Information (Spanish):

Degree:
Specialist in Mechanical Design

Delivery Mode:
On campus

Duration:
The specialization has three periods of one semester each one (1 ½ years) in which the student must pass 7 subjects plus a research project.

Coordinator:
Mr. Carlos Eduardo Lopez
E-mail: clopez@eafit.edu.co

Background: the program opened in 1999.

Purpose of this Program:
The Mechanical Design program provides professionals who have achieved the bachelor’s degree on Mechanical Engineering and similar courses with the basic tools in conceptual design and their application in the modeling, analysis and synthesis of problems in the engineering field.

The Specialization in Mechanical Design is open for professionals who have just finished their Engineering bachelor’s degree studies or for those experienced engineers that are willing to enlarge their academic training in the design field.

Justification:
Even though Design in Engineering deals with the conception, development, refining and application of all type of objects, the specialization emphasizes on the study of objects inherent to the engineer’s tasks (machines, instruments, devices).

From the engineering point of view, object conceptualization and design do not have a unique right answer. Overall, in order to solve a specific problem, there are many acceptable designs; none of them could be considered as the “only” solution. However, among the “right” answers, some are better than others, since they reflect a deeper technological knowledge, better design concepts and a more appropriate use of modern engineering.
The specialization is focused on the design of machines/instruments and devices by means of using tools that allow a substantial reduction in the conceptualization time, analysis and design process synthesis, seeking to improve the products quality and a reduction in the production time and cost.

Objective:
To train a specialist in the management of computational tools that are applicable to the analysis of engineering problems, specifically in what regards the improvement, the modification and the development of technical systems inherent to the engineering work.

Aimed at:
Professionals graduates with degrees in Mechanical/production/civil/electronics/systems/industrial engineering or similar courses that are involve the use of computational tools and that are applied to analysis of engineering products.

Graduate's Profile:
The graduate from the Design Engineering Program is characterized for:

  • Having general knowledge regarding the handling of computational tools applied to the design, analysis and simulation of operation conditions of products and objects of interest in the engineering field.
  • Being qualified to assess the trends of the development of computational tools applied to product analysis in the work field of the different engineering disciplines and their impact on work environments.
  • Creating valid solutions by using computational methodologies.
  • Identifying research opportunities and development of projects related with the development of processes (flows) and operations (objects).
  • Being qualified to face computational technologies suitability processes in the projects of technical systems development.

Based on the above, the graduate will be qualified in order to carry out the following:

  • Reduce the expected time in the modification of machine/instrument and device specifications, with the consequent savings in the production time.
  • Reduce to costs related to the development of new engineering products.
  • Achieve better specifications of the products in terms of shapes, dimensions, materials, durability, etc.
  • Reduce the scaled time of the families of products.
