About this program:
The activity towards specialized scientific fields is promoted in the specialization program in Seism - Resistant Engineering by training Civil Engineers dedicated to structure design and construction and fomenting the research in these areas.
The graduate from this program is a professional able to work in the analysis, design and construction, evaluation and repair of structures that in a safe and economic manner resist seismic effects. The graduate may also carry out research in the fields of seismic engineering and materials behavior.
Justification:
Colombia, being located in the Pacific fire belt and due to its historic records, may be defined as a high-risk seism country.
It is required to have professionals with deep knowledge in the process of seism generation and in the structures behavior when they are subject to these phenomena in order to face the high seismic threat.
Likewise, there is a request for professionals that develop technologies and constructive standards that fit the characteristics of the seismic phenomena that occur in the country and its economic conditions.
Objectives:
- To train professionals that may work in the analysis, design and construction of structures that in a safe and economic manner resist the seismic phenomena and that may undertake research in the fields of the seismic engineering and materials behavior.
- To train the Civil Engineer in the generation, evaluation, description and characterization processes of the seismic phenomena.
- To analyze and discuss the philosophy of both the seismic design and the behavior of the different structural systems by emphasizing on the Colombian Seism Resistant Design and Construction Standards - NSR-98.
- To develop in the Civil Engineer the capacity of evaluating the response of the structures and the behavior of the materials before seismic loads in order to obtain safe and economic structures.
- To create the need and to develop the research capacity in the Seismic Engineering area.

Graduate's Profile:
The specialist in Seism Resistant Engineering is qualified to propose the most suitable structural system for a given architectonic project, she/he is capable of analyzing with the most modern tools the structure proposed under all the bids, and finally, she/he is qualified in order to design and specify each one of the details that will allow the construction. Likewise, the graduate will be qualified to participate in the development and updating of seism resistant construction standards, to take part in the field of the structural advising field and in the study and analysis of the vulnerability of reinforced concrete buildings.
