Universidad EAFIT: / English / Academic Programs / Postgraduate / Engineering School / Soils and Fundation Mechanics

Academic Information (Spanish):

Degree:
Specialist in Soils and Foundations Mechanics

Delivery Mode:
On campus

Duration:
1 1/2 years (3 semesters)

Coordinator:
Mrs. Gloria Elena Echeverri
E-mail: gechever@eafit.edu.co

Background: The program opened in 1996.

Purpose of this Program:
The Specialization in Soils and Foundations Mechanics deals with methods, technologies and trends for the solution of geotechnical problems where soil is involved as construction material, support material or it interacts with different structures under static, geostatic and dynamic parameters.

Justification:
The presence in the local environment of a professional qualified in geotechnics contributes to the technologic development, the improvement in the application of engineering practices associated to the soil and to the multiplication of knowledge, especially in what regards the conditions in the tropics, noticeable seismic intensity, high slope zones, complex geologic environment and surrounding conditions that must be properly handled.

Objectives:

  • To train professionals with a broad knowledge in the geotecnics field that in a proper manner and with broad research face the problematic of the soil for its engineering use relating it to the geologic and geotechnical surrounding.
  • To make possible the application of new methodologies and tools to the solution of problems regarding the soil.
  • To analyze the behavior of foundations, taluses and special works under static and dynamic requirements.
  • To encourage an investigative thinking that promotes broad application projects in engineering.

Aimed at: Civil Engineers or Geologist Engineers

Graduate's Profile:
The Soils and Foundations Mechanics Specialist will be qualified to carry out geotechnical studies by performing suitable field and laboratory research for a specific project, which will lead him/her to propose concrete solutions as to the foundations and general stability of the project. In addition, she/he will be qualified to carry out soils and foundations analysis, to prepare contention structure designs and to make taluses stability analysis and to carry out geotechnical zonings.
