Background:
This program was created in 2002, motivated by the need to assess the governmental intervention and its impact on the regulated institutions’ decisions.
The economic sector in charge of supplying public services has passed in just a few years from being an industry controlled by state monopolies, to a configuration characterized by the opening to competition and to private investment. This transformation sets out important challenges to state policy: market phenomena are present (externalities, economies of scale and scope, public goods, integration, etc.) and account for State regulatory involvement to protect and drive the competition and to defend the consumer's interest. Likewise, along with a set of institutions in charge of the regulatory activity, the regulated enterprises develop strategies in order to face regulation and to have an incidence in their management. Economic regulation is relevant in other fields of the economic activity: financial intermediation, air transportation, mobile telephone services, private TV, retail commerce and the beverage industry, among others.
In 1958, the publication of the book written by Joe Bain, Industrial Organization, provided the first systemic presentation to the Industrial Organization, with the development of the structure-behavior-performance approach. This branch of microeconomics has had important developments until becoming an autonomous area of the theoretic, applied, positive, normative and highly specialized research.

EAFIT contributes to the development of knowledge and expertise in these fields by approaching the serious and consistent study of the theoretical issues, thus modeling and understanding the behavior of those involved in the regulatory processes, but it also covers complementary topics. The program then becomes interesting for those who work in companies - whether public or private - controlled by the State; for professionals who work in offices that control or supervise regulated enterprises, and for university teachers who want to incorporate this type of knowledge in their future courses.
Finally, it is worthy to note that this program has the support of the Master’s Degree in Economics at the Universidad del Rosario, in Bogotá. Through an academic agreement, a high training level of faculty is guaranteed, and we can also provide students the possibility of continuing for the Master’s degree at that prestigious university.

Professional and Occupational Profile:
The Specialists in Industrial Organization and Economic Regulation will be adequate for positions in the public sector, analyzing market structures of the different industries and suggesting formulation of sector policies. Likewise, they can perform well in companies that supply the regulated products and services, and in consulting to public organisms, such as the Ministries responsible for the regulations, or in private practice.
