Universidad EAFIT: / English / Academic Programs / Postgraduate / Science and Humanities School / Master of Applied Mathematics

Academic Information (Spanish):

Degree:
Master of Applied Mathematics

Delivery Mode:
On campus. Part time attendance

Duration:
2 years

Coordinator:
Mr. Jairo Villegas
E-mail: javille@eafit.edu.co

Background:
The Masters in Applied Mathematics was opened in 1977. This graduate program fosters research in the field of Applied Mathematics, to serve both in the industry and universities. Furthermore, this course seeks to motivate specialists to spread their knowledge.

What is the program about?
The program includes topics related to Operations Research, Programmatic Mathematics, Analysis and Design of Experiments, Stochastic Processes, Statistical Probability, Dynamic Systems, and others. These topics cover a full scope of possible solutions for practical problems.

Series of Time, Lineal Methodology and Econometrics have application in the area of economy and in many of the troublesome areas of companies. The application of Mathematical Logic allows students to access highly specialized topics in the area of artificial intelligence and Computer Engineering.

The Dynamic Systems are fundamental in the comprehension of topics in the Computer Theory, the feedback systems; and in the modeling, analysis and control of processes in general.

An important aspect in the knowledge of an object or an area of mathematics is the awareness of the relationship between them and the objects or situations of the Physics world that they may represent. And at the same time, there is a need to recognize the implications that make possible their adequate representation, (according to the limitations in the representation of the real object by the mathematical one). These issues are addressed by Mathematical Modeling that is one of the topics studied in the Master's in Applied Mathematics Program.

The joint study of application-foundation allows the student to develop a cognitive skill that makes him/her an excellent candidate for teaching and application of mathematics. At the same time, it enables the student to engage in further and highly complex research of any of the subtopics.

Objectives:

  • To promote the research in the area of Applied Mathematics, both in Companies and Universities through the training of their personnel.
  • To update the knowledge of teachers from Private and Public Universities who are interested in the developments of applied mathematics.
  • To take advantage of and to stimulate the specialized professionals so they apply and generate the use of the high level knowledge acquired.

Aimed at:
The Program is aimed at the professionals with the same level of mathematics as the graduates from Economy, Statistics, Mathematics, Physics, Engineering and related areas.

Graduate’s Profile:
The graduate of Applied Mathematics is prepared for:

  • The carrying out of research in different areas of the applied mathematics such as the departments of Research, Statistics, Quality Control, Planning, Marketing, Financial Evaluation or Management of Production, among others.
  • Continuing studies in Ph.D. programs of Mathematical Sciences and related areas.
  • Becoming a teacher and researcher in the area of mathematics at high school and university levels; and for designing and supporting material for the corresponding grades.
