Academic Information (Spanish):

Degree:
Geologist. Equivalent to the degree of Bachelor of Science (BSc) with Honours.

Duration:
Full-time attendance. Maximum workload is 19 credits (six courses) per semester.

Delivery Mode:
On campus

Head of Department:
Mr. Geovany BEDOYA

During one week, and in order to familiarize newcomer students of EAFIT with the work conditions of professional geologists and prove his/her vocational preferences, a Geology Introductory course is carried out in the field before starting the first academic semester.

Purpose of the Geology Program:
To train students as professional geologists and scientists who will be capable of studying the Earth system, its composition, evolution and transforming processes. Geology is the science that allows finding new mineral, energy, and water resources, and also helps to the understanding of the phenomena that originated and still keep modeling the planet.

Justification:
The geologic knowledge of northern South America has grown in an accelerated way during the last decade. Aside this, the national economy now demands world-class geologists in a number of areas such as:

  • Identification and evaluation of natural resources: (1) hydrocarbons, coal, gas, radioactive minerals and (2) metallic and non-metallic minerals
  • Geothermal resources
  • Underground waters
  • Rational use of the territory and its resources
  • Regional and Urban Geology
  • Applied Geology to Engineering and Geotecnics
  • Natural risks and disasters prevention and management.

Objectives:
A Geologist is a professional who, starting from the observation of nature, the assessment of composition of rocks, and the understanding of physical and chemical processes of the Earth, can: (1) prospect mineral, energy, and water resources, evaluate their magnitude and quality and participate in their exploitation, (2) assess geologic restrictions for the use of land in regional planning, urbanization and civil works, and (3) formulate solutions to reduce risks or solve problems that affect the surface of the Earth.

Student's Profile:
To successfully exercise the Geological profession, she/he should have a keen interest in science, be willing to work in the field, possess team work skills, adapt to new methodologies, and be versatile for the solution of difficulties related to his/her areas of knowledge.

Graduate's Profile:
Geologists work as prospectors of new mineral, oil, and water resources, as consultants in Engineering and environmental problems, and as scientists in academia and research institutions. They also work as environmental policy makers or assessors. The work of the geologist is divided between fieldwork, laboratory and the office.
