Background:
Opened in 1998, Music at EAFIT has been consolidated as a professional training program. It is recognized nationally for its academic excellence and for its many achievements.
The program counts with a devoted full-time staff, highly professional as teachers and artists. Teachers who live in other cities pay frequent visits to the University to work with the students. Likewise, the University benefits from the visit of renowned musicians and musical groups from abroad, who delight the community with their music, and offer master lessons and workshops to the students.
Music is a professional training program. It takes ten academic semesters and requires one more as an internship period. Admissions are granted each semester, and classes take place during the day. The program offers three different concentrations: Instrument, Voice, Musical Conduction and Composition.
Objectives:
- To train composers, conductors, teachers and music researchers, capable of facing any universal music repertoire and willing to promote the artistic and cultural work in order to enhance the City, State and Country’s musical development.
- To open and promote new spaces where young talents can find the possibility to create and interpret, enabling them to enhance and express their own artistic and creative talents and skills.
- To train a responsible and contextualized professional.
Student Profile
This program is meant for students with musical skills, preferably those who have had previous musical studies such as high school (bachillerato musical) with emphasis on music or its equivalent in the areas the program offers (instrument, conduction and composition).
For students who have not had previous musical studies, the program offers a leveling cycle, meant for those candidates who have none or very little musical training and/or who did not pass the admission test. It is a transition cycle where students acquire the basic knowledge and skills to succeed later in the program. This cycle is flexible and lasts between 1 and 4 semesters, depending on the knowledge and proficiency of the student. This transition cycle includes music reading, ear training, instrument mayor, introduction to music and choral practice.
Graduate Profile
The graduate Musician will be able to perform as an interpreter of the chosen instrument, as a member of orchestra or chamber music groups. The graduates from Choral Groups and Orchestra Conduction will be able to conform or direct choral groups or orchestras. At the same time, students who graduate with a mayor in composition will be able to make their own musical compositions or carry out musical research.
