Support for Academics and Research

Universidad EAFIT - English version - Support for academics and research

Responding to the challenges of a 21st century
university, the EAFIT campus is constantly
transforming its physical and educational environment.

The university also has prioritized investment in
technology, seeing it as a way to support and give new direction to students’ learning processes.

Luis Echavarría Villegas Cultural Center and Library

This learning center, located on the north side of the Student Plaza, is a space that encourages not only reading but also research, reflection and permanent creation.

Its books represent much of the academic, cultural, social and historical wealth of our institution, region and country. Located in the heart of the main campus, it encompasses study areas, research cubicles and specialized reading rooms with international databases.

The library also is equipped with multimedia and Internet rooms, a concert hall, a technical annex and audio-visual lab with a collection of material including concerts, lectures, documentaries and instructional videos.

Because of the integrated digital content referencing system model it employs, the Luis Echavarria Villegas Library and Cultural Center can be categorized as a Digital Library.

Heritage Hall

This institution, founded in 2002 with close to 1,000 texts from Joaquín Vallejo Arbeláez’s collection and 2,500 books donated by Fabio Botero Gómez, currently houses a wealth of historically significant material that documents important events in the political and social life of the region and country.

Texts from the El Carnero Bookstore and others donated by Pilar Moreno de Ángel, the first female member of the Colombian Academy of History, were later added to these archives, which are affiliated with the Luis Echavarría Villegas Library and Cultural Center.

The hall received one of its most significant donations in 2009 – the complete collection of the Antioquian Foundation for Social Studies (Faes), which belongs to the family of Luis Ospina Vásquez and has nurtured some of the country’s leading scholars in the field of social and economic history.

That collection was added to other material housed at the hall, including pamphlets, newspapers, magazines, historical archives, documents, musical scores and cartographic material.

Project 50

The institution launched its Project 50 strategy in 2010, training professors and student assistants in how to apply Communication and Information Technology to the learning process.

Three strategies are being pursued to further this objective: the development of competitions in the area of educational innovation, innovation in curriculum management and design and learning-focused technological development.

Some physical spaces have been installed as part of this university policy, including a content factory and a learning lab that allow exploration, experimentation and constant practice with technological and educational tools.

EAFIT Virtual

In keeping with its “Abierto al Mundo” (Open to the World) motto, EAFIT has strived to maximize the impact it has on the outside world with an intelligent, well-developed and ample presence on web and interactive
platforms.

In that sense, EAFIT Virtual is a department that supports the development of online courses, graduate programs and organizes events that make the university community aware of the importance of this initiative.

Information Technology Center

EAFIT boasts a technological platform that supports the teaching and learning processes. The work carried out there is the product of the university’s permanent commitment to being a technology pioneer and leader, evidenced by the development of academic and administrative innovations such as online enrollment through the EAFIT web site, access to classroom grades via mobile devices and a bi-modal platform known as EAFIT Interactive – tools that make our university more dynamic and competitive.

The institution has more than 2,950 computers, almost 42 computer rooms, 259 software packets, 80 laptops that can be loaned to students, 27 intelligent whiteboards, 2 mobile classrooms and 80 electronic teaching aids. The campus also boasts 100 percent wireless coverage.

In addition, all classrooms are equipped with cutting-edge technological resources, including six TelePresence roundtables that support classroom work and demonstrate that knowledge knows no borders.

Lab Center

Investigative processes and innovation would not be possible without infrastructure that materializes knowledge, tests it and puts it at the service of the sectors for which it was produced.

To that end, EAFIT has laboratories, workshops and research classrooms, most of which are located in the new Engineering Building and provide a space for applying theoretical knowledge and carrying out experiments and research that are integral to the learning process. These facilities also provide scientific services to the productive sector that, in turn, serve as feedback on the educational process.

Areas of study explored in these spaces include metrology, materials; machines and tools; and soils, concrete and pavement.
