Presentation

¿What is Economics about?
Economics is a social science. As such, it teaches to think, argue and analyze in a logical and structured way always looking for the support of economic facts to explain and forecast. The behavior of individuals, companies and countries regarding these economic facts are its principal source of inspiration and incentives its principal tool of analysis.

History
The offering of a program in economics, to those with diverse motives, above all of a social nature, was sought to be created in the university, adding the possibility that students would carry out their practice in different companies in the country, given the institution`s recognition in deciding a career.

Under previous guidelines and with a futuristic vision, the Bachelor in Economics was created in 1995. In this year started academic activities related to a professional discipline with 40 students, coming from various parts of the country. The intention of differentiating the economist of EAFIT in a regional and national scope is concentrated fundamentally in the ability to take advantage of the competitive advantages that, in the field of finance, marketing and management, has characterized the institution throughout its history.

Justification
Taking into account the academic strength of the institution and consequently the profile an economist from EAFIT would have, such as the reputation characterized in the education of economists in Medellin, the process of presentation began, and the approval of a Bachelor in Economics in the university, whose opening would contribute to the attaining of the objectives, curriculum and university education set out in the Strategic Development Plan 1992-1994 and in the Operative Development Plan of 1993. The offering of a program in economics, to those with diverse motives, above all of a social nature, was not desired to be created in the university that counted on that, adding the possibility that the students would carry out their practice in different companies in the country, given the social recognition of the institution, constituted in fundamental factors when it comes to deciding the career.

Objectives
To form professionals capable of leading the processes of social and economic transformation required by the country and in particular Latin America, closely aligned to the Mission of the institution. This is respecting ideological pluralism that characterizes a community, and being committed to its integral development in an excellent academic environment. Furthermore, to prepare professionals in economics who possess a solid scientific and humanistic education centered on the understanding and historical analysis of socioeconomic and cultural systems. Likewise, this academic knowledge allows the development of economic and financial studies of a sectorial and business nature, to design, and execute public and private planning projects, in addition to being able to offer services as assessors to specific types of institutions.

Also, the emphasis on research material significantly strengthens the academic and investigative potential of the economist graduate opening up a great scope for activity in this subject.

Likewise, the process of macrocurricular modification and institutional projects guarantee a greater humanistic vision and greater academic and laboral possibilities, upon equipping them with specific knowledge in an area of their professional discipline, such as their knowledge of a foreign language, demanded more and more, given the immediacy of the global environment we find ourselves in.
