IL Departament news

• EAFIT University became runner-up in the final round of the 9th Human Rights National Competition which took place in Bogotá in November 2011. The event that was organized by Universidad Militar Nueva Granada, Defensoría del Pueblo (Colombian Ombudsman) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). More than 70 Colombian universities participated in the Competition, which was composed of written and oral stages that simulated the work of the Inter-American Human Rights Court (EAFIT University took the role of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, presenting and defending a law suit against a fictional State for having violated a series of labor-related rights to a group of nurses belonging to a worker’s Cooperative). The participating students were Andrés Ordoñez Buitrago and Diana Carolina López Rodriguez, and Professor Paola Carrillo was their sponsor. Student Ordoñez was awarded a special recognition for Best Speaker.
EAFIT University had been runner-up in 2010 with law students Laura Rojas and Laura Posada, who participated in the Inter-American Human Rights Moot Court Competition organized by American University in Washington, D.C.

• A group of 10 Law and International Business students attended WorldMUN 2012, one of the most important Model United Nations worldwide, organized by Harvard University every march in a different country. In this occasion, the Model was hosted by the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. The students had an outstanding role representing the Republic of the Philippines in several committees and commissions of the United Nations, discussing different social, economic, legal and political issues.

• During the second version of the Summer School, EAFIT University will offer a course on International Law to high school students. This event is organized by the Department of International Law and will take place from June 19 to the 22nd. The UN, integration processes, interaction with domestic law and human rights will be among the topics to be discussed before making a simulation of an international forum. The course will be divided into three modules or subjects: Introduction to International Law and International Relations, International Organizations and International Trade. Proposed lecturers are Rafael Tamayo, Juan David García and Felipe Toro, all of them from the Law School.
