Work areas

Seismic Engineering

Objective

Advance in the understanding of the physics, underlying the propagation of mechanical waves in continuous media in order to produce novel engineering applications in the following fields:
Earthquake Engineering: Combining analytic and computational tools, we seek to propose modern analysis techniques for treating complex problems at the practicing level.
Micro-structured and periodic materials: Combining analytic and computational tools, we seek to understand the material response at the micro-level so we can manipulate it to fine tune its potential response at the macro-level.

Structural Optimisation

Objetive

The objective of this line is to develop techniques and methods for the analysis, design and optimization of structures and mechanical systems. This line includes fundamental and numerical research. It explores a wide range of topics related with optimization of fluid-structure interaction, propulsion, and heat transfer problems.

CFD-Computational Fluid Dynamics

Objective

The aim is to study fluid mechanics problems involving fluid structure interaction, multiphase flow, cavitation, and porous media. This line involves fundamental, numerical and experimental research and has direct application in the design of appliances, hydraulic machinery, and biomedicine.

Activities

Developing of Lagrangian-Eulerian methods for particle transport that includes porous flow and biologicaly driven forces. Study of moving boundary problems such as fluid structure interaction, deformable and rigid body motion, free surface flow and bubble motion and cavitation. Numerical methods includes Finite element approximation (the method of characteristics and variational multi-scale VMS), Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH), Moving particle semi implicit (MPS) and Lattice Boltzmann.
