Public Policy (PP)

The exercise of the public activity demands greater preparation levels of those who are willing to serve as public officials and employees.Public Policy emphasis constitutes an opportunity to study what is the public administration (PA) about and to apply the economic analysis in the government decisions.

The courses that comprise this emphasis cover the problems of government activities and public administration, the challenges to whichpublic managers are exposed, the role of officials in the government and their interaction with other sectors. This way, considering the different political, economic and institutional factors that surround the public administration, the convenience of applying differentgovernment intervention tools in economics is studied. Also, the applications of Microeconomics in the public sectors, based on Colombian experiences are revised considering the tax policies and spending programs. Finally, the most recent impact evaluation tools to value theeffectiveness and pertinence of public policies are addressed with the students.

Nowadays, the regulation of household utilities is a more technical and specialized activity. The production process of the regulations and its analysis of impacts on the companies, the economy and the consumer’s welfare, require the use of economic analysis tools and statistics techniques. One should have the ability to identify market structures in diverse public services and activities in the production chain. Thedefinition of the services and activities should be regulated and the regulation forms are a technical affair of the industrial economics and the theory of regulation. It is necessary to have abilities in several price and quality regulation models as well as in competence promotion schemes.  

Every public household utility company has in its organizational structure specialized units dedicated exclusively to regulatory management and analysis of the impacts of regulation.

Business Economics study the economics problems related to the business and its objective is to analyze all the economics concepts related to it in order to develop in the students an adequate comprehension of the challenges of companies and organizations when it comes toassigning resources. It is based on the economic theory and the quantitative methods to study the behavior of companies and apply theeconomic concepts to the entrepreneurship, using the analysis the practical aspects.

The Business Economic study factors that contribute to the existence of different organizational structures: relationship between economy and business, internal organization of the companies, entrepreneurship, business strategy inside a market structure, firm strategic behavior, corporate government and competition policies, are addressed in this line of emphasis.​​​​
