Main objective

The objective of this program is to generate understanding of the role and the importance of Canada as a trade partner and diplomatic allied of Colombia; regarding Canada from the perspective of the internationalization of the Colombian organizations and its Government initiatives, the consolidation of strong political and economic ties with this country. Therefore, the Centre of Canadian studies seeks though this diploma to encourage the debate and the research on Canadian International Relation issues, particularly the Canada-Colombia bilateral trade agenda among the virtually linked community.
 

Specific objectives

  • To understand Canadian Multiculturalism and its implications in the Canadian society and Foreign Policy.
  • To develop a research project that has viability in the short term as a business opportunity in Canada or a scenario for bilateral cooperation.
  • To study Canadian Political and Legal institutions and its influence in the decision making processes.
  • To visualize Canadian business environment and market opportunities from the perspective of the different Provinces and cultural segments.
  • To understand Canadian Foreign Policy and the context of the bilateral relation with Colombia.
  • To observe the role of Canada as a world leader on the Humanitarian causes and the promotion of democracy.
  • To highlight the economic opportunities raised by the bilateral trade and an eventual ratification of the Free Trade Agreement.
  • To contextualize the Canadian geopolitical scope and its implications in the relation with Latin America.


Learning method

This Diploma is based on a "learn by doing" method, which is conducted by different kinds of activities, within the following categories:
 

  • Evaluative. Practics based on real cases whose due and opportune deliveries determine the participant's certification.
  • Self-assessment. Activities which let the participants self-measure their acquaintances upon specific topics, with or without the tutor's feedback.
  • Forums. Activities designed for collaborative learning in which participants along with tutors enquire, discuss and solve questions concerning the Diploma's topics.
  • Integrative project. Consists of a final integrative activity which presents the acquired knowledge during the Diploma, whose due delivery, also determines the participant's certification.

Learning activities

The course learning proposal program is focused on practical activities that involve reading, researching and workshops developed according to each participant interest.

These activities were designed to enable the participant to achieve the proposed objectives while enjoying the performance of assignments. At the end of each journey, the students will take integrative activities where they socialize and feed-back their experiences through the forums.

At the beginning of the course, the participant should formulate a project of his/her interest regarding the bilateral relation of Colombia and Canada. Examples of it could be a research project on market opportunities for a certain product in the Canadian Market, or a research project aimed to find International Cooperation opportunities for a Colombian NGO with the Canadian government.

At the end of the course and as a result of the diverse activities done through it, the participant is encouraged to do a video or podcast as a final project were the results are exposed and the actual feasibility of the proposed project is evaluated according to the acquired knowledge about Canada.

Learning modules

This program has been developed considering the impact of a broad mosaic of disciplines providing an introduction to the analysis of historical, economic, political and social issues of Canada, and focusing on key issues faced by Canada in the international arena and the ongoing prospect of the bilateral agenda.

The Diploma “Understanding Canada: Trade Opportunities and Bilateral Relations” presents seven modules developed through 15 weeks or 120 hours:

Certification

By the end of the diploma, the participants will receive a certificate since they comply with at least 85% of the evaluated and approved activities throughout the course, and whose specifications are:

  • The learning activities must be properly done according to previously specified criteria, and be sent before their respective deadlines.
  • Feedback of the activities is given by the tutor, based on the specified evaluation criteria.
  • Unapproved activities, or with one or more aspects categorized as improvable, will give the participant the option of correcting and handing them in again before specified deadlines.
  • After the deadlines, nor activities or improvements of pending activities will be received by the tutor.
  • To be entitled for certification, the participant must have given in and have passed at least 85% of the activities assessed.
